Stakeholder Analysis Matrix

A stakeholder matrix, also known as a stakeholder analysis matrix or a stakeholder map, is a visual tool used in project management and business strategy to classify stakeholders based on their level of influence and interest in a project. This helps in determining the best way to manage relationships with different groups or individuals involved in or affected by a project. The matrix typically divides stakeholders into four quadrants:

  1. High Influence, High Interest (Engage Closely and Manage Actively):
    • These stakeholders have significant power to impact the project and a high level of interest in its outcomes. They are key players, and their needs and concerns should be prioritized. Regular communication and engagement are essential to ensure their support and input are aligned with project goals.
  2. High Influence, Low Interest (Keep Satisfied but Not Over-Engaged):
    • While these stakeholders possess the power to influence the project, they have less interest in its daily operations or outcomes. It’s important to meet their needs and keep them satisfied without overburdening them with details. Their support can be crucial for project success.
  3. Low Influence, High Interest (Keep Informed):
    • Stakeholders in this quadrant are highly interested in the project but have little power to affect it directly. Keeping them informed through regular updates is important as they can be excellent sources of feedback and support, and may help in spreading positive word-of-mouth about the project.
  4. Low Influence, Low Interest (Monitor):
    • These stakeholders have minimal interest and influence over the project. They require less active engagement but should still be monitored in case their level of interest or influence changes. Occasional updates may be sufficient to keep them informed.

Creating a stakeholder matrix involves identifying all stakeholders, assessing their levels of interest and influence, and then plotting them on the matrix. This strategic approach aids in tailoring communication and engagement strategies to match the needs of different stakeholder groups, ensuring efficient allocation of resources throughout the lifecycle of a project.
